Igniting a movement since our origins
Girl Rising was born from a powerful collaboration between filmmakers, journalists, storytellers—and girls themselves—to create the award-winning documentary, Girl Rising.
Our first decade primarily focused around storytelling-driven education programmes that help young women develop life skills, critical thinking, and the confidence to pursue their dreams.
In 2026, we officially merged with She’s the First and expanded our work to include Girls Leadership Programmes, deep collaborations with community-based organisations and uniquely holistic approach to driving change with girls at the centre of all we do.
We began as filmmakers exploring solutions to global poverty. That question led to the Girl Rising film 16 years ago — and grew a global movement and the nonprofit we are today.

Girl-led
We are a girl-centred, girl-led organisation. Our Girls Advisory Council partners with our staff, Board, and Fellows to shape programmes and storytelling grounded in the strengths, needs, and lived realities of girls everywhere. Two Council members serve on our Board, ensuring girls’ voices are part of organisational leadership. The Council is conducted in English and Spanish.
